WHY KETO

If you follow me on social media then you know I started a ketogenic diet.   Some of you are excited and want me to share my journey as well as want to know what made me choose it.  So I figured I’d put together a little ditty about it.  Haha… ditty… I have no idea why I said that.  I mean, isn’t a ditty a song?!  I promise I’m not singing, I’ll spare you.

Ok, I’m going to break this down and keep it simple because I know at first, I felt very overwhelmed and put off doing it because it just wasn’t clicking.  But after a lot of research, I found a positive and practical approach that I believe anyone can follow.  So here are my most commonly asked questions:

WHAT IS THE KETOGENIC DIET (better known as Keto)?

Keto is a low carbohydrate, high fat, moderate protein plan.  Eating this way will change your bodys primary energy source from glucose (carbs/sugar) to ketones (fat). I mean that alone was pretty much enough for me to go all in on this.  You’re feeling me, right?

HOW DOES KETO WORK?

It’s magic.  No… Haha.  But it’s way too complex for me to share in depth and that would bore you.  The main takeaway is that you are now avoiding foods that would cause a significant glucose and insulin response (like a high carb diet does) which allows your body to use the fatty acids that are freed from fat tissue when your body’s glycogen stores are depleted as energy.  Even that sounds confusing to me.  But this “Keto thing” is the real deal and they have the science and testimonials to back it.

WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF GOING KETO?

Weight loss is the primary benefit but then the overall feel good feeling from more stable blood glucose levels such as mental clarity and less cravings  but there are also many studies being done all over the world linking the Keto diet to positively treating many conditions like heart disease, cancer, Alzheimer’ disease, epilepsy, Parkinson’s disease, polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS), brain injuries, post-traumatic stress disorder, depression, acne and so many more.

WHY DID YOU (Jessie) WANT TO GO KETO?

Because of all of the above.  But to be more specific, I was sick of food controlling most of my thoughts.  I’m all about maintaining my weight loss a little easier and at this stage in my life, exercising is a must but not a priority so there are sometimes I only fit in a 30 minute workout 3 times a week which is not enough to maintain.  Which means I’m all about the mental clarity and less highs and lows that come with it too.  I mean serious, mom life has me all a hot mess.  I also have a family history of heart disease and cancer so I love that they are linking this diet to positively combating them.  And the acne that I still have in my 30’s has got to go. Oh… AND, one more – I freaking love eating food that doesn’t make it feel like I’m on a restricted diet.

HOW HARD IS IT TO FOLLOW?

Not hard at all although I definitely suggest a tracker to start just so you can be sure you are getting your body into ketosis which is the sweet spot.  It just basically means you are eating the right amounts of the 3 categories logged – fats, proteins and carbs for optimal benefits.  I use the free version on myfitnesspal as a tracker.

DO I HAVE TO TRACK MY FOOD?

See above.  At first, it is a pain because you have to create each food you are eating and enter the calories, net carbs, protein and total fat.  But once you’ve created it, they are there for use forever.  So the first few days are annoying and then it takes all of 2 seconds to track each time you eat something.  Don’t make a bigger thing about it than it is.

YOU SAID I GET TO EAT FATS, WHAT KIND EXACTLY?

You CAN ENJOY saturated and monunsaturated fats such as beef, pork, dairy (butter, cheese, heavy whipping cream and so on), eggs, tropical oils (avocado, coconut, olive), avocados, etc….

You should AVOID trans and processed polyunsaturated fats such as margarine, vegetable oils, vegetable shortening, etc…

WHAT DO I NEED TO START THE KETO DIET?

The proper mindset and the right tools.

Tools – Book – I researched and looked at several books before finding what I call the bible to Keto – ‘Simply Keto’ by Suzanne Ryan.  In the first 30 minutes of reading this book, I clearly understood what Keto was, why it works, how to start and how to be successful.

Tools – food tracker of your choice.

Mindset – Incredible change happens in your life when you decide to take control of what you do have power over instead of craving control over what you don’t.  We all make mistakes, have struggles and even regret things in our past.  But you are not your mistakes, you are not your struggles, and you are here NOW with the power to shape your day and your future.  If you want to change more than you want to stay the same, go all in.  Order the book and just start.

Let me know in the comments if you want me to give you my full review around the 4 week mark.

A healthier you is a better you which makes you a better everything (mom, wife, friend, employee, employer, etc…)

I’m rooting for you!

Xoxo,

Jess

    Hi Jessie,
I’ve abruptly changed my diet, cut out all meat, no processed foods, soda or sugar with the exception of what I digest in fruit and veggies. Primarily getting protein through smoothies, edemame and soy milk. I’ve been a better dad, spouse and feel like I’m in the zone on this diet. I do eat fish on occasion. 😣 I was cranky the first few days but realized I’ve been in control.. good conference for TR, my first, yours? Send me updates on your progress let’s push each other. You are super mom.. we have one kiddo. But we travel. Shoot me your progress and let’s crush these goals like I know we can, one decision at a time!
